Blessed by the Unprecedented

Of all the overused words of 2020, the word ‘unprecedented’ sticks out to me.  It seems that there were so many new things that occurred that there was no grid to filter them through.  This naturally makes us uncomfortable; we like to know what to expect and what sort of solution we can apply to a problem to fix it.  It is unnerving not to know.  Yet, I don’t think that being in ‘unprecedented’ days is such a negative thing for those of us who trust in Jesus Christ.  If you look at the book of Acts, for example, you find many unprecedented events there.  In fact, it was in the unprecedented that God showed up and did some miraculous events.  I mean Jesus said in John 14:12 “I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing.  He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.”  Greater things than these?  There was no precedent for that.  But soon the Holy Spirit was going to be poured out and the Church would be born.  God’s redemption story is built upon the unprecedented, so I believe we need to lean in to that and not away.  This past year has been full of stressful surprises for me, but in it God is bringing something new.  I look forward to what is next!
