Church Family Update - 07/24/20

As you may already know, starting this Saturday, July 25th, per the Minnesota Governor's Executive Order 10-81, people in Minnesota are required to wear a face covering in all public indoor spaces and businesses, unless alone. This mandate does specifically mention churches as not exempt, a detail I had hoped they would leave out.  The constant changing of the rules for us is much more challenging than any of the politicians realize.

As pastor, this kind of mandate is concerning for a couple reasons.  First of all, it has the potential to cause division in the church as some feel strongly for masks and some don't.  Second, it creates a distraction from the mission of the church which is not "mask enforcement"  but rather to make disciples of Jesus Christ.

The flesh in me says "you can't tell me what to do."   And I am sure many can relate. The church isn't a business, so how can they lump us in like that?  However, the Biblical position of this tells me that I need to recognize that "all things were created by him and for him"  -- which does include rulers and authorities specifically spelled out in Colossians 1:16.  Therefore, I need to be gracious and respectful as to be "seasoned with salt" (Colossians 4:5-6) which Paul writes in the context of watching how you act toward those outside the church and making the most of every opportunity.  In other words, don't ruin your witness by being stubborn and abrasive.  It is more important that people know Jesus Christ than for my political position to be known.

All that to say,  if you come with a mask or without a mask you are welcome.  We will not be policing that.  But like I said, let's not make this a big issue.  If you wear one, great, if not, you have your reasons and that's fine too.  The reason we are coming to the church is Jesus Christ.

It goes without saying that these days take great patience and grace for all.   None of this is the way I would have chosen, but I am trusting the Lord for His will to be done in it all.

Thank you for being kind and understanding in this all.  Let's keep seeking Him together.
